About the Authors
Dennis Cole
Captain Dennis Cole retired from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in 2002 after a 29-year career. He was assigned to the Sheriff’s Special
Enforcement
Detail/SWAT team for seventeen years, including four years as the SWAT
Commander. Dennis has been a POST Master chemical agent instructor since 1980
and serves on the POST chemical agents advisory committee. Captain Cole is
considered a subject matter expert by POST in the field of non-lethal chemical
agents, and has attended numerous instructor’s schools, including the Federal
Laboratories Chemical Weapons and Chemical Agent Instructor schools.
Prior to his law enforcement career, he served a tour of duty in the Republic of
Vietnam with the 1st Cavalry Division of the U.S. Army.
Dennis holds an Associate of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from San Diego City
College, a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from National University
and a Master of Arts in Management Degree from the University of Redlands. He
is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Craig Beery
Craig Beery is a former Sergeant on the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department
where he was assigned to the Special Enforcement Detail/SWAT team. During his
law enforcement career he worked detentions, patrol, and training. He was the
Tactical Operations Center Supervisor on SWAT call-outs.
Craig has been a POST Master chemical agent instructor since 1988. He serves
on the POST chemical agents advisory committee for aerosol chemical agents.
Mr. Beery is considered a subject matter expert by POST in the fi eld of non-lethal
chemical agents.
He teaches criminal justice subjects at three San Diego area junior colleges and is a
law enforcement trainer and consultant.
